Boy's room smell - how to get my room to smell like roses

Post by IndelibleDotInk »

Although I only smell it sometimes, my new room (been here 2 weeks) smells funky, like some guys' dorm rooms when I was in college.

It's not my hamper/basket, I put that in the closet and it smells ok.

Gonna try change my sheets more, bought two pairs on amazon.

Maybe will get some activated charcoal baggies, though not sure how I would put them around the room.

I have a glade spray in a nice scent, clean linen is the way to go, but it's temporary.

I have incense, but don't wanna set off the smoke alarm.

Any suggestions?

is there carpet? if so, baking soda sprinkled on the carpet. let set for a while, then vacuum up. if no carpet, putting an open box of baking soda out will also absorb odors. if it's a hard floor, I'd try a vinegar wash. all natural and easy. also, personally, I love the smell of Downey and airwick makes a plug-in for that scent that I love tooo 🤗

No carpet. Will try baking soda and order some charcoal baggies.

I have never set off a smoke alarm with incense yet and sometimes I burn it from the time I get up until the time I go to bed.

Is it an older house? Some older houses just naturally have weird smells from all the wear and tear. Decades of cooking smells, pets, shoes dragging who-knows-what inside, etc. Carpets are especially notorious for soaking up odors.

Do you rent or own? If rent, bring it up with your landlord. No shame in it, you're paying them to live there.

Swiffer makes a really good wet mop w/ disposable sheets. I'd use that on the floor. Leaves an awesome scent that lasts for days. This is what I use in my basement, kitchen, and bathrooms.

Walls - fresh coat of paint. If wallpaper, replace it.

Problem is, all of this only masks the odor temporarily. If it's really pungent and won't go away, it may be rot or mold.

House is brand spankin new and mostly smells terrific!

I'll check on the Swiffer wet mop, great tip, most of the house has nice flooring, some carpet, but my room has flooring. Really like the Swiffer line of products.

When it comes time to repaint, there's an odor-absorbing paint I will look into.

Wish I still had my dog, coulda blamed the stankiness on her, it's kind of embarrassing.

I do think the activated charcoal bags will help, I'ma use rope and tie some up to my curtain rods. They work so well in my cars and closet.

Oh man! This literally made me LOL!

I have a 17 year old son, and this is a constant battle.

What it boils down to, is him just sitting in his hot little room, gaming and sweating. So obviously it’s worse in the Summer months :?

It’s gotten much better over the last 2 years though since he’s been working. He showers on a daily basis, does his own laundry once a week, and washes his bedding about every 2-3 months.

One thing you will definitely want to pay attention to is your mattress as well. It’s easy to launder your sheets and whatnot, but funk also permeates your mattress. Lysol, Febreze, or a diluted bleach solution should be used rather liberally on your mattress every time you change your sheets.

Hope all these suggestions from everybody helps! Good luck! :)

Definitely seconding a new coat of paint if possible, but throw some Kilz on the walls first! We live in a house whose owner used to chain-smoke cigarettes all day every day, never even cracked a window... stuff was baked into the drywall, man. Some of that had to be replaced but what remained was coated in one of the Kilz line of products, painted over, and there's not even a trace of the old ciggy smell left.

Seconding baking soda and incense, but you might want to walk (or crawl even) around just sniffing at things in hopes of finding a source. At least if the source is found it can be dealt with appropriately; incense/bakingsoda/charcoal/lysol/etc will make the issue more bearable but won't totally fix it. If nothing at all is found then it's back to square one. Might be something behind the walls. :( I'd hope a newer home would be free of problems like that but you never know!

Fresh air and sunlight can also do wonders if you can leave windows open for a significant amount of the day or night.

Having had a teenage boy in the house, washing clothes and sheets frequently and having a protective mattress cover on and washing that frequently and letting mattress air out and spraying it with Febreeze helped a lot. If you can, leave windows open for fresh air.

Washed sheets, got two new sets to rotate more frequently, hung some activated bamboo charcoal baggies from my curtain rods.

Hope this makes a difference - it's def not the paint or stuff in the walls, this house is brand new and smells great, just my room had a little funkiness from... me, I guess. Aiyah, lol.

Thanks for all the suggestions, some fresh air will be good too.

Shower, shower and shower some more. You're in a very warm, humid climate. If I lived in Hawaii I'd probably be showering twice a day myself.

Japanese incense doesn't put out as much smoke as Indian and it's more subtle. Here are two of my favorites.

Japanese incense isn't built on sticks like Indian. You'd need a little bowl or cup full of sand.

Oh, seconding the Japanese incense for sure! I haven't tried the brand(s) linked, but I've been using Shoyeido and I'm a huuuge fan. Puts out so little smoke and still smells good even hours after the stick burns down.

Activated charcoal is working wonders, so is the fresh air during the day. Appreciate all the suggestions.

I have some japanese incense (seiun smokeless joss sticks) and vanilla sticks, but use them infrequently. I don't like a heavy incense smell on me and my clothes, I like to smell like a bit of simple soap with a hint of cologne.

I throw open the windows several times a week, get some warm, sweet Hawaiian air, and put up bags of activated charcoal on my curtain rod. My room smells great!

Fresh air can do wonders for the inside of the house. I love to put my bedding and pillows outside for a day, then going to bed at night smells magnificent. :D

Airing the room out now, mom's cat is cruisin, watching everything outside. Fresh air, full of aloha!

I just spray a bit of Ozium and it seems to take care of everything. Really effective stuff but too much will make your room smell like soap for two days.

I use ozium in the car along with a charcoal bag. Very nice, ginger spray smell which results in a neutral, clean scent. I use one spray as I exit the car.
