Post by WotAnAtti2d »

Kind of like the power going out, it's a lot bigger today then it was years ago, wow and I'm starting to sound like I'm old now...
I don't mind being "old" at all:

* I don't mind not needing instant gratification.
* I don't mind not caring what others think of me.
* I don't need a "safe space".
* I don't mind not being a slave to my smartphone.
* I don't mind being content with what I have.
* I don't mind having grown up in an era where everyone worked (I didn't even know what welfare was until after high school). And it wasn't because we were rich, no.... We did with what we had. I never even realized that we didn't have much money when I was young, because no one made a big deal of it.
* People interacted with actual people, not Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, MySpace, etc.
* I had to leave the house to go to a library to do my homework. It taught me to do my own work, not copy 'n paste something on a report, not even knowing what it was about.
* I worked as a teenager (started at 13), in a greenhouse, sweating my ass off to make some money. It taught me about working hard for something that you want. That lesson early in life, helped me put myself through school twice, while also working a job as I went to school. My parents offered to help me, but I never felt that it was their responsibility, as so many kids expect that nowadays.

All of you that are "older", know where I'm coming from. I'm glad that I'm at least halfway through this ride we call life.

As my usual disclaimer, I'm not trying to offend anyone with this post. If you are offended, you've just reinforced what I have said.

Now the above statements are a REALLY GREAT "Attit2d" Wot!....Sort of scary, as I say the exact same things ALL THE TIME. I started working for my Grandfather's Construction Company (framing houses) at 13 as well. Real honest, "sweaty" WORK teaches you more about life than any school. We gotta be near the same age? I bet we could be good friends in person.

I wonder if the kids today know what a record is, I don't know what would happen if you asked them what a 45 was.

Wasn't there a bunch of 'Skittle' games? I remember Skittle Pool and Skittle Bowling but I feel like there was a lot more, I think I can remember the TV commercials for those games, wasn't the guy from 'Max Smart' in those?

Hey Stimie, my 24 year old daughter knows about vinyl lps , but only because I kept stacks around when she was a baby. Funny thing though, when she returned home from college, turns out records are kind of “hip” again, underground of course. She and I have found a few thrift shops locally that have vinyl and when she is home, we try to go check it out. I still have a couple turntables, too. I love my records.

That’s a good one, Blends. My aunt who is about ten years older than me, gave me a box of albums from late 60s and early 70s, when I was about 15. Abraxas was in there. Iron Butterfly was another. That box of records was a treasure trove.

I grew up with Incubus, System of a Down, Linkin Park for music, Windows XP with Visual Studio Express. Another staple was my catholic schools khakis and polo dress code stuff, it's so crazy to think of now lol. Guess weird realms to think of as far as childhood items and maybe a little unfitting but that's what I think of. and I started learning VB.net when I was 9, lol.

I have heard people say that the analog quality from vinyl is far superior when compared to the digitally compressed mp3 format

Maybe I'm too old to tell the difference, I do remember music really sounding different when the four footer with the six shooter days were over...

My 23 year old son loves vinyl! I bought him a turntable for Christmas and let him borrow a few of my Pink Floyd and Zeppelin albums. A lot of artists are releasing their work on vinyl now. Isn't it cool that it's back in "style"?

When Napster was the thing, you could download all kinds of .mp3's with the original hisses and pops of LP's and 45's. I loved them, it was like listening to the record player on the PC. Then, everyone hopped on the train of "clear, pure digital music". I was dating a younger woman and I had a CD of some of the original recordings in the car player. She asked me how I could listen to "this garbage". I told her before she was even a thought, this is how music was before they "cleaned it up". I always cringed when she listened to her 80's music and tried to tell me how great it was. Just poke my eardrum out with a pen, lol.

I had a Napster subscription. It was the coolest thing to be able to search and listen to whatever you wanted to!

Remember when Lars Ulrich went after Napster? At the time everybody hated him but he was only protecting the artists. They really did lose a shitload of money from nearly nonexistent record sales as a result. Now they make it up with selling concert tickets for 200.00.

There's a slightly better one, but it's on an old hard drive somewhere. This one is close enough.... Napster bad!

You can still get vinyl rips online but they're usually pretty clean-sounding anyways.

I was watching an older movie tonight and I saw something on it from my childhood days that the kids nowadays would NEVER dream of... television sets with dials! Yes kids, back in the day, you had to get up to turn the TV on/off and change stations. Although when I was really young, we only had three channels anyway, lol.

Heck, y'all are talking about things when I was a teen. I remember Flubber. It was semi-clear blob with bubbles & could be formed into whatever shape you wanted, plus it bounced really high. It was taken off the market when kids were breaking out in a rash after touching it. Then there was Silly Putty, but my parents got angry when I left it on the carpet & it melted into the fibers. Back then in the late 50s horror movies were a big thing, so toy stores always had fantastic creature masks & hands. The worst part of all this was those cool toys always "disappeared ". I found out later when I got married that every year my mom would get rid of half the toys. Sad.

Lets talk about the cars we had! My first car was a 68 VW. I didn't know how to drive a stick shift and when I took my driver's test I popped the clutch and went up on the curb. Needless to say, I failed that test.

My second car was a 1970 Orange Challenger. I gave $1000 for it in 1976. OMG that car was beautiful! It had Mickey Thompson headers and a Hurst pistol grip shifter. It was way too much car for my 17 year old ass but I loved it! I had it for 2 weeks until my idiot boyfriend totaled it while I was at work.

I wish I had known how much muscle cars would be worth today! I sure would've bought a bunch and put them in a barn somewhere.

My first was a 1970 Fastback Mustang. Yellow. My father bought it from my stepbrother for me for $1,500 in 1974. I kick myself regularly for not hanging on to that car.

I learned how to drive on a friend's 1960 (or was it a '62?) Corvette when I was 15. First in the parking lot of the old Sick's Stadium in Seattle, then after I mastered the stick shift, we took to the streets. I can't imagine trying to get the hang of driving a stick on those steep Capitol Hill streets coming up from downtown Seattle now, but that's what I did. lol

eta: MetalMama, my stepbrother got a Challenger after he sold the Mustang to me. I think it might have been the same year.

Our neighbor had one of those Mustangs. They were so pretty! My mom had a 65 red convertible. I think she gave 1500 for it. Just imagine how much these cars would be worth today!

I can remember learning to read in 2nd grade, we must have used those books all the way through elementary school 'See spot run, run, run, run...'

I think they were called the 'Adventures of Dick and Jane', those pre-existed Sesame Street even.
(If one could imagine that a world without Sesame Street could have ever been possible.)

Cabbage patch dolls, My Little Pony, reading Judy Blume books on the sly because for kids books, there was a whole lot of ‘coming of age’ themes involving ‘nocturnal emissions’ and reading Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret was a 4th grade act of rebellion. (This was the original cabbage patch dolls and my Little Pony’s—MLP was given a millennial makeover and now they look vaguely demented.)

Wow $3.50 concert tickets to Sabbath! That wouldn't even cover the fees these days. And I wish I held onto my hockey card collections especially with the rise in popularity lately.

Off the top of my head, a big one is Nintendo on Christmas morning, playing duck hunt. Goosebumps books by RL Stine. Riding in the center seat up front between my parents on a 4 hour road trip in a station wagon with wood paneling.
