Northern Lights tonight!

Post by herbalhippie »

And we just got a Special Altert from the National Weather Service about it. I have
never seen anything like this from them before.

btw, I've been seeing pix coming out of Europe already and there are fantastic displays
in Germany, Poland and even Italy.

...EXTREME GEOMAGNETIC CONDITIONS OBSERVED AND SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC
STORMS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEKEND...

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has observed extreme (G5)
geomagnetic conditions Friday afternoon and expect severe (G4)
conditions to continue through the weekend.

* A Geomagnetic Storm of this strength can cause multiple and
widespread issues with various power and communication systems.

* Widespread voltage control problems may occur; some power grid
systems may experience component failures, disruption of service
and protective device trips. This could result in blackouts.

* Pipeline currents can reach hundreds of amps.

* GPS and other satellite navigation may be degraded or
unavailable for days.

* High Frequency (HF) radio propagation may be impossible in many
areas for one or two days.

* Low-frequency radio navigation can be out for hours.

* Aurora may be visible at much lower latitudes.

Just saw a photo of Northern Light from Florida! Red (the rarest color) and right overhead! Wow!

I couldn’t see anything here. :(

Were you able to see anything from where you are?

I sure did! Well, I didn't go out of my way but I saw them from where my car is parked. To see the color
from here I had to look through my phone camera. I did go up by the airport for about a half hour, there
are wide unobstructed views for many miles north to south. But at that point the lights looked like thin, grey
streaks covering the sky.

People got beautiful pix from in town, not even getting away from light pollution. I was seeing amazing
pix from all around the world last night. This was truly a once in a lifetime thing.

Might happen tonight too.

Oh yeah, I saw pix from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky. Too bad they didn't make
it down as far as you are. :(

Sadly there is way too much light pollution to see much of anything here. And then we also had the clouds from the constant storms. Plus they are burning something in Mexico and the smoke is making its way here creating so much smog. We had an air quality alert the other day and the air was so hazy. So it was like 3 different things contributing. :(

I’m glad you got to see it though, that must have been quite a sight to behold! Seeing the northern lights is on my bucket list, even if I have to travel to the arctic circle.

You can't see the Northern Lights from here, but if you are looking at the horizon of the ocean, just when the sun goes down and you are in the right position, you can see a green flash. I have never had the luck of seeing it, but it's not often I'm at the beach at dusk, or any other opportune place to see it.

I guess I'll just have to settle for rainbows. Double rainbows are pretty common, and I've seen triple on several occasions.
