Anyone have experience using kratom to help withdraw from gabapentin?

Post by Tiffany »

Hi all, it's been a while since I've been here, my mother suddenly passed on November 14th and I was given quite a bit of gabapentin to help with my panic attacks and anxiety, I've definitely been over taking them, probably about 600 mg pills 10 times a day and then some, I've been slowing it down for 3 days, taking 7 or less of the 600mg pills. I've withdrawn from gabapentin years ago, before I ever discovered kratom and while I was an active alcoholic, I've not drank in 2 years, kratom has helped immensely with keeping that thirst at bay, that is one of the reasons I sought out gabapentin to help function while planning my mother's memorial and trying to put funds together for her cremation etc, it's been a nightmare! But now that it's done, I am low on what's left of gabapentin ( 7 pills) and I fear that using it in high doses for nearly 2 months I got myself into a bad withdrawal situation again. Does anyone know if kratom will help.. either way Im about to find out

Don't have experience with gaba but just wanted to say very sorry about your mother and I wish you a successful transition/taper.

sounds like you've been taking it for a month and a half, which isn't that bad. if it was long term it would be harder.

10x 600s a day is a lot. you really, really should have started tapering a while ago, a short 3-4 day taper isn't going to help much. try to make those 7 last for a couple days, taking one at a time only when you really need it.

kratom will certainly help, but I'm sorry to say, it's still going to really suck. I don't think you will be in any medical danger, but with benzos and gabapentinoid withdrawal there is always risk for seizure. like I said I don't think you have to worry about that, but just be aware, if you need to go to the hospital.

in a pinch, alcohol can help curb the withdrawals, since that works on your gaba receptors too. if you can obtain some sort of sleep meds, beta blockers (to lower blood pressure), or anxiolytics I'd recommend getting a hold of them now. hopefully you have a few days to just stay in and withdraw, you're not going to want to do anything physically exerting.

good luck.

I tapered off of a lot of Lyrica a few years back (3x150mg/day). Just cut my dose every week and did a longer taper and didn’t really feel anything coming off of it. I’d recommend a shorter taper and Kratom should help you a bit, better than nothing!

let us know how it works out for you.

I'd also recommend going on reddit's r/gabapentin and search for withdrawal information and tips/advice/what to expect; they would know far more about the process than us here.

Kratom would help in a generic “soften the blow and make life a little better” sense, but kava would be superior.

Kava has gaba activity, and VDCC activity, just like gabapentin. And in my opinion, kava is even more benign than kratom.

Yes it’s pretty effective but if you’re using it for mood you might want reconsider. If your taking for nerve pain than Kratom is definitely a effective way to help with the withdrawals from going off gabapentin. Luckily for you you didn’t do this with Benzos. I take 900mg daily but the doses you’re taking are insane but since it’s not a benzo there should be no risk of death from withdrawal just a lot of discomfort. I’m a drug addicted fiend so I would be a hypocrite if I said that you need to stop but i will give you my take. Alright so I’ve been through a lot, and have had panic attacks, and extreme anxiety all my life, and have been taking two milligrams of klonopin a day since I was about 18-19. Im now 24 even before that I abused benzos heavily. What I’ve learned at least with me is it never helps to just take more pills to deal with them. I’m not saying don’t take anything but it’s very easy to take to much then go through hell. Your anxiety gets worse because you have abused yourGABA receptors which control anxiety. The best way I’ve found is to take low dose benzos only as needed but it’s a fine line your walking taking anything for anxiety if your like me, and abuse them heavily. I’ve since quit abusing them like I did only taking as needed. It’s okay to take gaabpentin daily but it shouldn’t take doses that high to cope. It seems like you have some underlying problems you might be better dealing with first before taking insane amounts of gabapentin. Either way as long as their was no benzos in the mix the risk of death is pretty much zero as are anything else except worsening anxiety for a set amount of time. So i recommend tapering if you don’t want to be in hell for a x amount of time. Then figure out a sustainable dose of something , and be careful playing with your GABA receptors because those can be some of the worst long lasting withdrawals in my experience. Also benzos are the only known drug to kill someone through just withdrawals though it’s rare just something to keep in mind if you every prescribed them then decide to take 20mg a day for months. Not saying it will kill you because I’ve seen worse, and I’m still alive but it is the worst withdrawal I’ve experienced which includes heroin.

I keep a bag of powdered Valerian Root Extract Powder around, and I've used it at times to benefit from its effect on GABA receptors. Different ones from those Gabapentin targets though, which I guess is both bad news and good news.

The bad news being it could only offer at best some mild support with coming off of Gabapentin, the good news being that it shouldn't leave you still dependent on that afterwards.

Pretty reasonable price from Bulk Supplements. I often recommend that company, so I want to repeat that I'm not affiliated with it in any way. I get mine from Amazon as I benefit from Subscribe and Save. I order a bag, then remove the subscription.

Kava can also be nice, and so too a cup of Green or White tea, with their Theanine, and whatnot. I keep a box of inexpensive 100 count tea bags around, and it makes for a relaxing break. If Black Tea doesn't make you edgy, then you could benefit from its Theanine as well.

I was on gabapentin for 3 years it was pure poison for me and left me unable to complete simple sentences but it did help the pain I only stopped when it made me feel suicidal see the thing is I never thought it was the med basically I believed I was losing my mind.I was on a large dose daily so Dr tapered me off the only seizure I ve ever had was while tapering off it.I m sorry your going through this.I personally didn't use kratom at the time but I wish I had known about it I can only imagine it would help.I ts my understanding There's a lawsuit going on against it because of all off label scripts it's the newest we don't know what to do let's try this med and many people have horror stories.I know it helps some without all the side effects but I also know it's harmed many others.

Exactly! All the sudden everyone I knew had a gabapentin script for a different reason. Myself included. It worked for a week or two then I started seeing side effect and decided against it. It's not worth the risk. Especially when I start hearing the horror stories. When it comes to my health, I've got enough horror. I don't need more!

Dont mean to kinda jump in off topic but I was just prescribed gaba for nerve pain and at 300mg day(3x100mg 3x a day). Do I need to not take it or worry about it becoming addictive? Anyone have any knowledge on that? I looked online but it just gives the medical info on it and not like getting buzz or anything..

Only you (with help from your doctor) can make that decision.

I tried it - did absolutely nothing - but some folks swear by it. And others swear at it. If you have pain and it helps, then don't be afraid of it. OTOH, if kratom helps I'd much rather take it than most meds.
