More Dune stuff

Post by herbalhippie »

I didn't know this before I started modding the Dune sub, but Dune was originally serialized in Analog magazine before it was published as a book. And no regular publishing houses
were willing to pick it up, the first publishing of Dune was by Chilton in 1965, the same company that makes (still) the auto repair manuals.

Our senior mod has been working on this for about a year. This is a comprehensive look at passages from the original serialization in Analog that were edited out
of the publication of the book. Very interesting! For Dune fans anyway. :)

I knew that, but i did not know such substantial parts were taken out. As a reader, Dune seems so... well put together and flowing.

Ah, the Golden Age of science fiction (when we were 12, lol)! :)

A lot of the old Galaxy Magazine issues are free to view online, legally, at archive.org. They look good once you figure out how to use the Zoom function. https://archive.org/details/galaxymagazine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Science_Fiction

You can read The Stars My Destination there. Fans of Babylon 5 likely know of the author, as Walter Koenig's character was named for him.

Here's Part One:

The first novel to win a Hugo award, also by Alfred Bester, was also in Galaxy Magazine, and is also available online. This is the novel that gave JMS the idea for the Psi Corps, and for using a jingle as a telepathic block.

I forgot to thank you for the link! Good stuff.

Edit: Ah ....
and at its hub lay
the single conceptualization:
The human can assess his circumstances and judge his limitations of the moment by
a process of mental programming, never risking flesh until the optimum course is
computed. The human does this within a compression of real time so short that
I think right there we're seeing the influence that General Semantics had on Herbert's thinking. Heinlein's novel, Gulf, was heavily influenced by it as well. The Dosadi Experiment took that theme of untapped brain power and really explored its possibilities. I'm do for a reread of that, big time!

Still more Dune stuff.

We've been removing AI art for months and just telling the posters sorry, you can't do that here.

So I made a new subreddit for it. r/DuneAI

Told the senior mod it was made and ready to go. He made an announcement. It went marginally viral on Twitter and a few news articles. I got almost 500 new members at my new sub. Yay!

Lol, in the context of the Dune universe, with the Butlerian Jihad, that is both appropriate and very amusing.

I have to admit though, that if Brad Dourif* endorsed a Nootropic drink that enhanced thinking and energy, and was flavored so heavily with berry concentrate that it stained the lips, I would be down for that, lol.

I like how in the Fallout game they have pills called Mentats that enhance your perception ability. They also have a Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch in one of them, tucked away in a basement. 8-)

*His character in Deadwood, Doc, was a bit like a Mentat advisor to the Town's de facto Baron, Al Swearington, now that I think about it. And the Civil War had twisted his thinking, but in a good way, which correlates to how the Tleilaxu would provide a twisted Mentat, if that was requested.

i gotta get in on this reddit dune stuff.

where do i start??

was the spice orgy a sexual orgy as well as emotional and intellectual? in the beginning it seemed as if monogamy was highly valued - fighting to the death for a wife, not hooking up with irulan? jessica's last line about they would be called true wives?

there was just some discussion in the sub about the spice orgy

https://www.reddit.com/r/dune/comments/ ... t/ivhnzbj/

Reading at least the next two books will give you more insight on Irulan. Jessica was only ever Leto's legal concubine, but she was his wife in everything but title.

Second Dune trailer dropped yesterday and it's a doozy. Minor spoilers if you haven't read the book. Some people say this spoiler gave too
much of the movie away but maybe it's just going to be a beast of a movie.
