Single serving (AeroPress) tea

Post by acejestyr15 »

Let me start by giving a brief backstory.... I have now been using Kratom for about 2.5yrs +or- and made the decision to pick up an aero press the first week of January. I have had GI problems for as long as I can remember which have nothing to do with my original methods of leaf usage but certainly wasn't helping! I started off mixing my dose with warm to hot water and some type of citrus juice then eventually began using powdered citric acid. My dosage has always been on the higher side for multiple reasons including previous longterm opiate abuse, chronic pain issues, have always had a natural high tolerance to any and all substances (urban myth that it is common with gingers/redheads), and also prefer the sedating effects in order to help battle my atrocious insomnia. Although, I do still enjoy my energetic and mood boosting strains during the day of course!

Since switching, especially once I narrowed down a solid conversion that works well for me, I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that I enjoy the tea even more than any other methods!! I had made tea before but mostly using crushed leaf and also a simmering method rather than this steeping method. Plus, I also feel that the AeroPress truly makes an additional difference as far as the final product...it squeezes out every bit of the good stuff imo!! Not only has this method been much easier on my guts but I have also noticed more consistency of good effects per each burn, faster onset, the newfound ease of taking Kratom on the go as its super easy to bring couple bottles of tea most places, and also the most noticeable for me is the amazing CLEAN feeling of the effects of each cup of tea. It is truly mind boggling the difference.... almost like trying certain strains for the first time all over again!! If you feel I left any pertinent info out, have questions, or whatever else please post here or you can even feel free to send me a PM if you prefer.

Here is a list of the things I use to make my single serving teas...
AEROPRESS
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0047BIWSK/re ... EEbB7TKAY7
MAPLE SUGAR
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004TSPMEI/re ... EEb7HXF4RR
CITRIC ACID
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EYFKM32/re ... EEbHJRWJPR
STAINLESS STEEL FILTERS

AeroPress single serving tea recipe (if you don't have an AeroPress just filter using any other method)

1. Start by measuring out your dosage for however many individual cups of tea you want to make....I usually make 2 or 3 separate cups at a time. Through my trial and error while converting to tea I discovered that most powdered leaf requires a higher dosage in order to make same strength tea as whatever your other method of prep was. For me personally, I've found that somewhere between 115 to 140% of a t&w or mix and chug/slurry type dosage usually is; so for example if your t&w dosage is 5g than use 5.75g to 7g to make tea. Though, we are all different so may need to tweak the amounts. Now you can dump determined amount into a cup safe for hot beverages that holds at least 14oz. of water.
2. Add your acid of choice whether citrus juice, Apple Cider Vinegar, or whatever you prefer. I use about .5g of powdered citric acid as seen above.
3. Now pour .75 to 1oz. of 170 to 185 degree water into each cup per gram of Kratom being used, stir, and cover for 30 minutes minimum. So if using 5g powder then use 3.75 to 5oz water.
4. Finally, uncover your cup and stir it up one last time. Then, pour into the Aeropress and GENTLY apply pressure using the paper filters included with a new press or the o2 combo filters I listed above work best IMHO.
5. Lastly, if you would like additional flavoring and or sweetening that can be added now.... I listed the maple sugar that I like to use now and then especially on the occasional bitter teas, but i actually enjoy my tea just the way it is out of the press!
6. To store additional cups of tea more than 10 or 12hours I definitely recommend adding a small bit of baking soda (¹/¹⁶ tsp +-) in order to neutralize the acids used and created by kratom itself. Over time the acids can potentially degrade alkaloids that we don't want to lose.

Like said above.... feel free to ask questions!! This whole process has been not only a great change health wise and effects wise for me personally, but I've actually had a lot of fun experimenting as well. So, I'm more than happy to discuss further with anyone who is interested! And just one request for anyone who gives this method a shot.... please leave feedback, whether it works just as well for ya or even not at all!! Just as I enjoyed experimenting, I'm super interested to hear of other members' results.... thanks for reading, I sure as hell hope this works/makes a difference for some others!

Definitely going to give this a try. Probably be a month before I can get everything necessary the way amazon shipping is right now, but I definitely want to try it.

Thanks for the detailed post Ace! I've had an aeropress since January as well. This method interests me and I've used a very similar method except I freeze it in an effort to extract more alkaloids. I have used 125%-150% of my usual t&w dose. I have struggled to get equivalent effects from teas/red bubble. It just seems like something is missing from the burn and I don't think its placebo :| i know my extraction is working because the finished liquid is RUBY RED. Maybe I'll add the baking soda to see if that retains any more alkaloids.

Do you feel like the effects last as long?

One of the most informative and helpful posts I’ve read on these boards - thanks ace!

I’ll say that after chatting with ace he convinced me to give the aeropress a try. I had tried making tea other ways and it NEVER worked out for me. But with the aeropress, not only is it so much easier than other methods, but the effects were faster and stronger and easier on the digestive system.

I’d highly recommend giving this a try. Even if you don’t make tea every time (I don’t, I usually just t&w), its good to have another option to mix things up. I think the process even results in a different feel to your dose - in a good way!

For me the effects of tea are just as strong and long lasting if not even more so at times than more commonly used methods!! I would first suggest making sure that your water isn't hotter than the suggested 170 to 185 degrees, maybe that's where things have gone wrong for you in the past??? Idk....

Interrrresting! I have always poured it on right after it stops boiling. I have a boiling pitcher that i can set to that exact temp. I'll try again at that temp. Thanks Ace

Thanks for the info Ace!!

I have been watching a lot of aeropress videos and you may have missed a detail that would go un-noticed to those who have never used one.
4. Finally, uncover your cup and stir it up one last time. Then, pour into the Aeropress and GENTLY apply pressure using the paper filters included with a new press or the o2 combo filters I listed above work best IMHO.
Did you mean to say something like "Pour into the Aeropress. You then position the full Aeropress back over the empty cup and GENTLY apply pressure using the paper filters included with a new press or the o2 combo filters I listed above work best IMHO.[/quote].

I only add this because, prior to watching the videos, I didn't understand how these things worked.

I believe that you can also boil, then simmer you tea concoction in a saucepan on the oven range top, then pour it into the Aeropress and go from there?

Again, thank you - especially for adding the parts about citric acid and baking soda. I'm guessing a lot of us are going to try this :D

I'm not sure I completely understand your suggestion/addition???

Basically, the aero press is like a huge syringe, right?? So I steep my tea in a seperate cup.... Then after 30min of steeping I setup the tube portion of the syringe(aero press) with the cap and filter on snug on a sturdy cup then I pour my tea mixture into the tube and place the plunger portion over that in order to GENTLY apply pressure while pressing. Make more sense??

And also, yes, you can simmer tea on a stove top which I quickly touched on.... But I have never had much luck with that method personally so I prefer to steep my tea rather than simmer is all.

Yes. This is the part that you left out. Good to see that recognize this and have amended your instructions. The original had the 'User" "plunging" the tea into.... well nothing.

Thanks.

since you're using so much liquid, how many times are you opening the aeropress to put in unstrained tea?

I dont... I actually pour in first portion until it is full, then stir it up a bit as the level begins to naturally drop due to it slowly trickling into the cup underneath, then once there's enough room I pour in the rest and continue with my pressing. Good question!!

I would assume that less water can be used for a smaller dosage! My issue is that I have a pretty high average serving size so make sure to have enough water to allow for complete extraction. I am slowly experimenting with smaller doses/less water as I am currently trying to taper down slightly and lower my individual dose size. I will most certainly share and other findings, and update this thread as I do so!!!

Thanks for the suggestions/great questions guys... Glad other people are at least finding the info interesting!!! 8-)

With all this downtime/time at home it's a oppurtunity for experimenting and discovering new methods and such!! Anyone else trying new Kratom recipes, techniques, methods, or whatever else it may be?!

Let's hear and see what ya got going on! As I've said already, these experiments weren't only interesting and fun to do, but it all really changed my life as far as how well Kratom truly works for me (even tho never had much complaint before lol), how Kratom effects my stomach or other areas, ease of explanation/introduction with other people, and also ease of taking extra doses on the go

I'm still trying to find my less is more dose.

When I put all that kratom for a higher tolerance, the amount of water has to be large, and it doesn't drip through the filter, resulting in me having to open the press several times to put in more of the kratom and water mix.

Also, because of so much kratom, gentle pressure is not enough.

Currently trying to drop the dose to a few grams per serving.

What filter are you using???

Also fyi... I've been doing additional testing and have found that can def use as little as 1oz of water per 1g of powder to make aeropress tea. I know it's not much less but every lil bit helps!! And also.... You don't have to keep opening the press to pour in the last bit of what's left, pour in till it's full then stir it a bit to allow the level go down via it dripping thru filter.... Then pour in the last bit from your steeping cup and press it thru GENTLY.

If you can't press GENTLY then there's def something wrong. I would say too much powder and or wrong filter choice and most likely the latter I'd figure....

I would definitely try using a metal filter instead of the paper ones. I use my aeropress inversely, meaning I put the kratom and water in first and then the filter last. I've had no issues with doing up to 8 grams at a time.

The reasons I don't use the inverted method FYI.... 1 I felt I need to use a slight bit more water than that allows.... And 2 from many reviews and such I've read using the inverted method wears out the plunger much much faster and some people have reported even after replaced the rubber potion it still never sealed/pressed properly again, hence my steeping in a seperate cup. Plus, I make 2 to 4 seperate cups at a time so gotta steep the others elsewhere anyways hahahaha.

I have just tried to read as much as I can as I do with most things especially when it comes to ingestion!! Just try and base my experimenting, findings, and methods off what I have read, seen, and experienced for myself is all I can do.... And seems to have been a huge success so far IMHO!!!

Wow that's crazy, I hadn't seen any reviews that really mentioned that. I've just read about the aeropress on here and then watched a ton of YouTube videos where they reviewed it using coffee, and almost all of them use it inverted.

Well I suppose I will plan on getting a second aeropress to have as a back up. I'll keep doing the inverted method with the aeropress I have now and see if I start to have any issues and I'll report back with what happens.

Sounds like a good idea, thanks! I think part of how they get away with inverting for coffee is cuz it only has to steep for like 60 seconds not 30 to 60min....

I am using the single filter (came with the single and the double) where the holes are larger than the combo filter.

I love the aeropress for coffee, lol, so it's no waste, but I'd like to be able to use it for tea as well. Once I figure my less is more dose, I'll resume experimenting with the instant pot for larger batches of tea.

Ace, thanks for posting this. Understanding and explaining the aeropress is extremely beneficial to those who haven't seen it or used it before. This is the type of content that is great for the community!

Hey fused, all of that information you was explaining to me on MeWe the other night about the bioavailability and potentators and how they actually work with the body. Can you post that here? I know it was illuminating and helpful for me and it probably would be for a lot of people on doublem.

UPDATE......

So I have done some further experimenting with the amount of water necessary for complete extraction in making tea with the aeropress. So far, I have been able to drop down to about 1oz maybe even slightly less of water per gram of kratom used in your dose minimum. Meaning if your Kratom tea dosage is 5g would use 5oz of water give or take to steep the tea.
My own personal average serving sizes are all higher than that for brewing tea so that is how I have tested my theories FYI. So with that said, for lower doses like 3g or less I am not sure if the same 1oz water per 1g Kratom will still apply or not giving the fact that it's just not very much water in those cases.

Just thought I'd give a small update as it has seemed some people have been concerned with the amount of water used in particular if it does not all fit into the aeropress initially. Even with my larger dosage at 1oz per 1g I can now fit my entire brew into the aeropress all at one time which has definitely made pressing much easier as well as less tea volume to drink!

Hey, ace, question for ya: do you feel aeropress tea mitigates more side effects than just GI issues? I'm specifically looking to reduce hair loss more than just dosing every other day. I've added biotin supplements and pure ad'or thinning shampoo/conditioner/ scalp serum already. Which, BTW, even if the thinning stops I will continue to use. It's become my all time fave S&C.

Sorry but I can't speak on mitigation of other side effects and most certainly not hair loss/thinning unfortunately. But, I can say it definitely helps to make most burns much cleaner feeling, hit faster and harder, much easier on the belly, and such. I have never had issues with my hair pertaining to Kratom so I just can't speak on that sorry my friend

Using a gentle pressure, how long does it take for you to push out all the liquid? About a minute?

When pouring into the press, very little liquid is coming through the filter, and it takes more than a gentle pressure and a few minutes to squeeze out the tea.

Used a bit of baking soda to neutralize the acid and will consume tonight.

Hey fused, all of that information you was explaining to me on MeWe the other night about the bioavailability and potentators and how they actually work with the body. Can you post that here? I know it was illuminating and helpful for me and it probably would be for a lot of people on doublem.
 What'd I say? I'm happy to post, I just don't remember what it was about.
