According to the Plea deal, Guthery will not be fined or face asset forfeiture as is typical in federal money laundering cases... “My question is, is there more going on,” says Suzanne Lynch, professor of practice - economic crime at Utica University in New York and an expert in money laundering. “How was all this money allowed to leave? Did the banks do their due diligence?” Assistant U.S. Attorney Melanie Pierson, who prosecuted the case in the Southern District of California, has an answer of sorts. “Sadly, the rest of that isn’t public," she said. "It's more complicated.”

Well that's the level of business that can add or alter features in the biz landscape in the US. I remember. Personal benefit isn't unheard of and neither is same in a clearly unethical sense, whether in commerce, govt., finance, law enforcement - the most vile being people willing to do anything - Anything at all to other people in the name of fulfilling responsibilities of their position... so they can advance. In conversation with a friend it'll be about the kids and family. It's what they tell themselves. It's career worship.

But this guy and the AKA, Susan ,... yea. And I'm still glad they did what they did bc despite personal moral or other failures- they also contributed to what we're able to have and do now. Oh him... evading seizure. Maybe more but if ever were a time for desperate or dramatic defiant action - that'd be the kind of time it was- how I think about it anyway.

I’ve been in the accounting/finance realm and am a CFE. I want to most respectfully say, and as an avid member of the kratom community, that all vendors should at the very least understand this.

I remember when weed was first decriminalized in DC, people were selling it via t-shirts. Spend $60 for a t-shirt from an artist, and they deliver the shirt and an eighth (I might or might not have been a customer….many times). I know of at least two of the bigger guys get popped for money laundering. When your 6-month old t-shirt business brings in $250k, banks start asking questions.
