Educating your physician about kratom

Post by boureka »

I don't know about you but at one point, I practically had to (fingers crossed behind my back) promise my doctor I wouldn't go near kràtom. When I'd initially mentioned it, he'd never heard of kràtom but the next time I saw him, he was sure it was devilweed. I guess with a Wikipedia, WebMD,and Mayo Clinic search, he was now an " expert". I never mentioned it again but I'd like to. He's a reasonable guy. Any links anyone recommend I forward to him? here's one I foundhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC73 ... 0psychosis

I have seen numerous people post that they told their doctor they took kratom and as a result were flagged as being a drug user. It's a shame.

That being said, if you trust your doctor and think he's open to alternative treatments, I would go ahead and try to educate him.

I think your point is excellent and important. A real caveat to the naive patient. There's a difference between a conversation of, "Here's this substance, here's some information about this substance. What's your opinion?" and "I dose 3 times daily on this leaf." So, yeah, tread carefully

Thanks. Looked up jack henningfield and yeah. As far as animal self administration assays though, I wouldn't know where to begin. Not sure what it is! I'm imagining a hedgehog doing a toss and wash, a badger making bubble tea... Do you have a link?

There are assays! There are rats! There's self-administration!

Our family doctor we've known for almost 20 years, so we have built up a large trust. He also has prescribed MANY opioids for my wife and I, handing them out like candy even nowadays (when they have cracked down on such things in Florida).

I had no problems telling him that kratom got me off of the opioids - he was actually very happy about it.

Go here - https://www.researchgate.net/scientific ... 2116909551

About 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down the page, find "Understanding Kratom Use: A Guide for Healthcare Providers".

You can "Download full text" (a blue-lined box to left-click) :D

There are lots of other texts on the page as well, but that one is good.

Animal models for addiction include those who will self administer the drug, often to death. They typically respond in operant chambers on levers or peck keys to get the drug.
Here is an example

Eric, thanks by the way - the one I posted above I found by looking for Jack Henningfield. It's a good one, and specifically for health care providers :D

Absolutely perfect. Just what I was looking for: a fair and balanced article for the healthcare practitioner.

I have to speak to the truth in which you remarked about the "crackdown" on drugs in Florida. I had a therapist for many years and she was open minded when I told her about Kratom. Rather than discrediting or making me feel like a "druggie", she commented that no one knows our own body and mind like we do.
She retired last summer, and now my new therapist is sooo narrowminded and hyperfocused on the crack down but doesn't know anything at all about Kratom. I'm not going to explain myself to her either.... I am actively looking for a more open minded psychiatrist that truly cares about you as a person not as a stereotype.
Knowledge is power! I agree with you, know your doctor and if your trust in your doctor, its definitely worth a conversation;).
