I love pitbulls - do you have a favorite breed?

My service dog Mei was a pitbull, American Pitbull Terrier (APBT).
Dog breeds commonly called pitbulls are:
American bulldog
American bully (a modern breed, very stocky, hulking muscles, huge blocky head)
American Pitbull Terrier
American Staffordshire terrier
Dogo argentinos
Stafforshire bull terriers (NOT bull terriers, those are much diff, think spuds mckenzie and his triangular head)
Many dogs are called pitbulls based on looks, despite not being a bully breed, which is one of these breeds derived from a bulldog x terrier, originally for bullbaiting, dog fighting, working on farms/family dogs. Due to these jobs, pitties are inherently people-loving and very athletic. They can often be dog-aggressive if not socialized at an early age. Some people think pits are human-aggressive and the cause of most dangerous bites, but the numbers vary depending on source. Guard and attack dogs seem a lot scarier to me and they are trained to be vicious.
Anyway, favorite breed or your experiences with breeds or particular dogs? Having a good dog is one of life's most joyous experiences. I never had much interest in them until an exgf had a dog and we'd take her to the dog park. Later on I got Mei and she totally changed my life for the best.

I love pit bulls as well. And Labs have always been personal favorites... But My favorite specific breed (if I had to pick one cause I love all dogs haha) is actually a mix - a Lab/Pit mix!! My brother and I had a beautiful pit/lab mix when I lived with him 10 years ago and she was just amazing. Sadly she died of cancer at just a little over 2 years old but I love the lab/pit mix
But I now also love Whippets!!! Description of whippets from Wikipedia: "The Whippet is a dog breed of medium size. They are a sighthound breed that originated in England, where they descended from Greyhounds. Whippets today still strongly resemble a smaller Greyhound. Part of the Hound group, Whippets have relatively few health problems other than arrhythmia."
Roxy, my fur-baby I had for ten years before she died earlier this year was a Lab/Whippet mix (or a Terrier/Whippit mix, vet was not sure exactly full breed except part whippet but assumed lab was the other breed). From reading about Whippets they appear to be super easy to care for - they are quiet, loyal, plus known to be very clean and often don't have that "dog smell"... I've read they are becoming more popular in recent years in the US. Roxy could not have been more easy to take care of. She never had any "dog" smell and was the easiest dog to keep clean, Roxy also literally never went to the bathroom inside the house (no accidents in 10 years - how rare was she?), only puked twice the whole time I had her, never got sick (until kidney failure suddenly at the end), and just wanted to make her humans happy, always staring at me

Seriously she was almost no maintenance required, she spoiled me with how easy she was

And she barely barked and was a quiet as a dog could be, though she had the cutest squeal/whine when I'd come home from work. She was super fast, could jump with insane athletic grace and leaps several feet and bounce around a couch when she got excited, yet was incredible goofy I was always thinking she was going to hurt herself the way she jumped around recklessly
I'm rambling but good thread topic!! I'm still looking to adopt a new dog. Life isn't the same without them. I share your love of Pitbulls too, and also hate the stigma around the breed. They can be such gentle loving animals when raised well. Hard to pick a favorite breed, but Labs and lab-mixes (esp lab/pit and lab/whippet) are what I look for the most, generally speaking

Whippets look so fragile, I don't have any experience with racing dogs.

Pits have a bad reputation for their bite force but it actually isn't that strong if you look at the PSI
I am much more wary of Mastiffs, who were bred to fight off big cats and bears, and have a harder bite than a wolf.
I think it is really the crazy pit attitude that is the problem with some owners. They definitely aren't for inexperienced owners.
Some of the most loving dogs in the world though. Great cuddlers.
I am a big fan of golden retrievers. I think they're the best family dogs. So gentle, usually good with any kind of creature. Very smart too.

I love pitbulls. Big ol' sweeties! It infuriates me that they've gained a bad reputation because they don't deserve it. They used to be considered "nanny dogs" once upon a time (
https://www.adoptapet.com/blog/for-over ... bysitters/). I would adopt a pit without hesitation.
But that said, my favorite breed is rescued mutts. I like the mix of characteristics they have, and there are a lot of health problems with purebred dogs.
I currently have a Gordon Setter / Border Collie mix, and she is the absolute best dog. I know everyone thinks that about their pets, but everyone who meets her thinks so too.
I'm going to be a huge mess when she dies. She's already pushing 9 or 10 years old (rescued, so not sure). Hopefully she's got at least a few more years in her. She still seems happy and healthy! I love her so much!

I had to put down my dog last week. He was a mutt, and sweet as could be. Made it to 15. I keep getting up to go check on him, or get the urge to take him out 'because I haven't taken him outside in a while.' Was cutting my steak earlier and I cut a good scrap and almost dropped it on the floor for him.
Still hurts a lot. I am wrapped up in his blanket as I type this.
I wish dogs lived forever.

They're so amazing and become such a big part of our lives. I hate that they're with us so briefly. 15 is a healthy age though! My childhood beagle mix lived to be just shy of 17, much longer than we expected. We had a habit of saving the last bites of our meals for him. I couldn't finish a meal for quite a while after he died.

Sorry to hear about that! I had to put my dog Roxy down around the beginning of March. She was a Whippit-mix (Lab-whippit was the best guess from her vet but could have been a pit-whippit too) and had just turned 10 and was healthy her whole life, never sick, and then she had sudden kidney failure. I remember my mother and I took her to the vet, thinking at first it was likely just something minor because she was acting normal except not eating (and had a metallic smell coming from her), and afterwards we took her home and about an hour later the vet called us with the results: The vet said we had two options, one being aggressive treatment and the other putting her down!

It was such a sudden shock, hearing this over the phone, and it was hard to grasp it fully when the vet told us her kidney functions were failing, and even treatment likely would not work.
I had to try, I don't care about the costs. We did 3-day aggressive treatment that cost me around $1500. There was a glimmer of hope on day 2, but her blood work just kept getting worse and worse, and she still wouldn't eat anything, and after the 3rd day treatment she was at 5-6 days without having eating anything really.
I still find myself reaching for her in her spot on my bed, or waiting to feel her kick me in her sleep (she looked like she had crazy vivid dreams and the only time she barked was in her sleep

). Coming home is the worst too because I keep expecting to be greeted by her. I could not have asked for a better dog. I had Roxy for 9 years and she never went to the bathroom in the house ever, not one accident, and she only threw up 2-3 times the entire time I had her and never got sick as well. She spoiled me in that regard with how easy she was. It's been since March and it still hurts. I wished our animals lived longer!!
I've been looking to adopt another dog since. Haven't been able to do so yet. Hopefully soon. Hopefully it gets easier for you as well.

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry to hear about Roxy.
My dog has had congestive heart failure for a while now. He had all of this liquid pooling in his chest cavity and pushing on his lungs and enlarged heart. It had been a struggle for the past year and a half, but he mostly seemed okay. The week before he died, he was even running a little bit.
This time his heart was just too stressed out and his oxygen levels too low, even after increased doses of his medication and being put in an oxygen chamber. He wasn't improving, and he was totally immobile and unable to use the bathroom outside. He was wetting/pooping his dog bed and then just... laying in it. Not something dogs usually do. He had 3 beds and free reign of the house, so there was always somewhere else to lay down. But he couldn't do it. I would carry him outside and even just a 60 seconds of walking around outside would cause him to have heart attacks and seizures every single time he would go outside. Squatting to poop was too much effort. He would use the bathroom on me while I was carrying him in and out. Just a sad state to see him in. Went from 'maybe we should take him to the vet' to 'we need to put him down' over the course of 3 days. It is crazy how quickly things can go downhill in old age.
Very glad that I was able to put him down and prevent him from further suffering, even if it hurts. I held him in my arms as he drifted off.

Same here. Had to put down Mei and Max (my cat) in January. Does it make our time with them more precious? It's not bitter, but sure is a sucking hole of loneliness, turmoil, and pain.

I love almost all dogs. Boxer's are probably my favorite breed though. They are great with kids if raised around them, super smart and dumb AF at the same time, dunno how but they are. Very high energy though so you gotta play with em a lot. The boxer I have now is 10 years-ish old and still has so much energy, even though she prob does not have many years left. They are also pretty tuff dogs and mine has scary growl/bark,also faster than they need to be,you blink and they are a block away.

I'm so sorry! It breaks my heart that our pets don't live as long as we do.
I love dogs, but am not a dog person. I'd hoped to get a standard poodle this year, but I've decided one of our cats would probably lose her mind if we brought a dog into the house. My cats are Ragdolls--I pretty much adore all cats, but especially Ragdolls and Maine Coons. I've got two Ragdolls--one who acts like you'd expect, but the other is not chill, and is somewhat fearful of strangers. Seems like it would be cruel to bring a dog into her home, so we'll continue being a dogless house.

I love dogs so much. I also love all animals. I love pitbulls, they are so adorable and feel so bad for all dogs used or trained for fighting. I grew up with German Shepherds and as an adult had a found/rescued Shih Tzu, then a Chihuahua. I've had cats for around 25 years. I have two cats still and I'm sure I would've rescued or fostered a dog also of any size since they allow them where I live but my health issues make it hard to get up in the morning to take them out and don't feel I'd give them the time and attention they deserve. I don't feel I give my cats enough attention and it's not true they don't need it and are aloof! Mine are only aloof when they're depressed or pouting or sleeping. They follow me from room to room, stare at me and generally act like they want my attention all the time. I know a dog would be even more competition. Also, I live in a townhome with no yard or fence for a dog. I don't even have a screened-in patio for the cats which I know they'd love so they could at least hear birds. I live in South Florida, it's hot all the time and AC is a constant. My FB timeline is filled with photos of animals, especially dogs, at different local shelters and also lost and founds that I share. It's mind boggling how many are lost just in my area, so sad. I would not be afraid to get a pitbull if I were looking to foster or adopt as long as the temperament was vetted by the rescue and I've seen many photos of them adopted onto homes with other animals and babies and kids and testimonies as to what lovebugs they are. Dogs are a lifetime commitment and provide so much love, companionship and loyalty.
