Any tips, favorites, recommendations? My
tip: always get whole bean and grind right before use only.
Found the aeropress makes mid grade grocery store coffee taste great - a sweet cup every time. I like Lion coffee for this.
Love using my French press with Honolulu Coffee's Lokahi - an affordable bean.
Have had 100% extra fancy Kona from Honolulu Coffee and others, but don't think Kona tastes any better than other high quality beans.
Beanbox.com gets you a coffee subscription, you can select different options and have the beans delivered right to your door! I just joined, $16.50/mo. for 4 packs of 1.8oz coffee, free shipping, first month $10 off.
https://beanbox.com/invite/NemiJU There's also a coffee of the month in large bags with varying frequencies of delivery, and if you like a certain coffee you can order it on its own. Yes, they have batch numbers!

Re: All things coffee
Like the Aeropress, cold brewing can turn mid level coffee grounds into great tasting sweet joe. Simple to do with a French press.

Does anyone use a burr grinder? I am using a cheap electric blade one, but as I'm getting more serious about coffee, seems like the size of grind becomes more important, esp. when varying cooking methods. Suggestions?

Re: All things coffee
I can't speak to whether burr grinders help as my own grinder is also electric, but that is an A+ tip, to buy whole beans and grind before brewing. I keep meaning to get more "serious" about coffee but I'm worried about the potential cost of getting into it, as with any hobby, lol. The AeroPress makes such a huge difference in taste though, even for my usual $5 bags of flavored grounds. It blew me away that some (relatively) cheap plastic thing could be such an improvement over a pour-over.

-Never use milk - always buy a little bottle of REAL CREAM! A small splash can take medium quality coffee to the next level or bring out the subtle flavors in high quality coffee. Like using fresh whole beans ground right before brewing, this is a total gamechanger! Even though I love black coffee, I have been using a dollop of cream in the last few days, oh so good.

Yup!! 1 hundred thousand percent to this right here. TJs has a sweet creamer right now that will make your knees buckle. 3 different creams and sugar. It is whipped cream before the naughty hot whipping action.IndelibleDotInk wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 6:54 pm -Never use milk - always buy a little bottle of REAL CREAM! I just got some Arabic coffee. Had a sample and it was amazing black. It has some kind of herb mixed in. Not sure if I can just put it in a kcup like normal coffee grounds or if there is some special process to brew it.

Re: All things coffee
- I bought an adjustable burr grinder: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1 to be able to easily adjust the coarseness of the grounds and to have a uniform size of the beanies. My cheap electric dull blade grinder was producing a grind that was half fine and half whole beans. It's a manual crank, I think I will be able to bond more with my coffee by being more hands on.
- Koffee Kult dark roast beans... a new favorite. Lots of flavor to enjoy black or add a little cream and savor the deep flavor. Great price. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08 ... UTF8&psc=1.
- Kratom and coffee pair so well together for me. It's not for everyone, but I love it.

Re: All things coffee
- my manual burr grinder didn't work out; it was built with quality materials like glass and steel, but the design was terrible, the beans wouldn't drop into the grinding area and was cranking on air.
- So got this electric grinder: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1 it works beautifully and was recommended by a bunch of baristas and coffee snobs in an article I read comparing grinders.
- Now my grounds are a nice, uniform size, as my blade grinder would chop up half the beans into a fine, espresso powder, and the remaining half huge, quarter bean chunks. Will report back on the difference a consistent bean size makes.

I have a Hario cold brew pitcher, but you don't need anything fancy for cold brew - a French press or mason jar or anything, really, add grounds, add cold water, wait a day, strain, and voila! Cold coffee concentrate. Dilute 1:1. Cheaper meh coffee does well for cold brewing and aeropress, more expensive beans do better in a french press or pour over.

Re: All things coffee
Anyone have suggestions for the best sweetener for coffee? I think sugar is the best, but have tried some stevia and like it, need to try it a few more times, noticed that Starbucks uses it and a few local coffee shops use it. I have Swerve, which is erithrytol, and it's great for food recipes, but tastes off in coffee. Right now drinking something with saccharine, it's ok, but more sweet than i'm used to. Would not buy saccharine.
Update: Stevia works great to balance coffee with alittle sweet flavor. Recommend.

There is also 'white coffee,' coffee made from ultra lightly roasted beans, these you should order ground, as they are super tough. It also often has mid Eastern spices. I have yet to try it, though.

Re: All things coffee
I purchased Kick Ass beans from Kicking Horse company via Amazon and am liking it. Not as good as Koffee Kult dark, but interesting because of a strong smoke taste, kiawe smoke, to be exact. There's just a little too much smoke to make drinking it black from my French press and aeropress enjoyable. A hit of real cream tames the smoke flavor and makes it good, but I found cold brewing it eliminates the smoke and cause a deep, sweet caramel flavor which is intensely drinkable black, or with cream. At first I was put off by the smoke and the fact that I got a kilo of it, but with the cold brew I am very happy. Make sure to check the date because mine expired on May 19; I had ordered it at the beginning of May.

Huh. Thanks for the tips. I had never heard of the aeropress. I've been loving my Bialetti Moka pot for awhile. If you've used on of those, I would be interested in hearing how you compare brew from the aeropress to the moka pot. Now I have another coffee press on my wishlist and I'm off to brew me another cup, ha.

Re: All things coffee
I have a moka pot but it hasn't seen much use. I do like it. VS aeropress the moka pot makes a thicker, more frothy brew, and takes more time. Cleanup also takes longer. Both give you a concentrate and both use pressure and heat for the extraction, though the aeropress only uses the heat for a few seconds.

My all time favorite coffee sweetener is an ever-so-slightly sweetened (with powdered sugar, or cane sugar as an alternative) freshly whipped heavy cream.....IndelibleDotInk wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 2:08 pm Anyone have suggestions for the best sweetener for coffee? Got some stevia packets, about 1/4 to 1/3 a packet is sweet enough for 12oz coffee or 8oz concentrated over melting ice. No strange aftertaste, strong sweet sugarlike flavor. Much better than erythritol or saccharine.
Aeropress... made by the guy who made the aerobee frisbee. Genius invention, quick cleanup. While I wouldn't travel with mine, I love it.

Got tired of cream spoiling before finishing the carton; sometimes skip a few days of coffee and the cream sours. After trying heavy cream and whipping cream with coffee, I can never use milk or half and half again, let alone non dairy creamers. Found some powdered heavy cream which doesn't need refrigeration, ordered from Amazon. Real cream is a total game changer.

I too, loveee heavy cream in my coffee. I also put a little cinnamon and pink salt (evens out the bitterness) and sometimes unsweetened cocoa which is an antioxidant.IndelibleDotInk wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 11:21 am Found some powdered heavy cream which doesn't need refrigeration, ordered from Amazon. Throwing this out there: I did keto some years back (successfully) and developed a taste for butter and (specifically) ceylon cinnamon in my coffee. Cinnamon Toast Crunch in a cup. When I started doing that is also when I found out fats, like, double the heady effects of kratom (for me).

Re: All things coffee
Cocoa, and more so raw cacao, has theobromine in it, a gentle stimulant with mood boosting properties and no crash, and some caffeine to get perky. For awhile I was toss n washing 1-2 tablespoons a day, but I found I liked getting the two via guayusa leaf better.Sassysquatch wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 11:58 am I also put a little cinnamon and pink salt (evens out the bitterness) and sometimes unsweetened cocoa which is an antioxidant.
Also some places have brewing chocolate, which you make like coffee and has both those stimulants, and chocolate tea, which is milder. www.manoachocolate.com. I tried the brewing chocolate and liked it, but it's costly and again, I prefer the guayusa, which is grassy and fantastic poured over a mug of ice.
I have tried kopi luwak, coffee made from the partially digested beans pooped out by civets, thought of as the holy grail of coffees. Unfortunately I got robusta beans instead of arabica and I didn't think it was that good. (Robusta beans have a lot more caffeine and a harsher/stronger taste than arabica, and has its place, especially when making south east asian coffees.) For me, it was more of a novelty, but I would try it again with better beans found at a friendlier price.

Powdered heavy cream is as good as regular heavy cream and no worry about it spoiling after a few days in the fridge.
Mentioned before, Koffee Kult's regular Dark Roast is amazing.. just tried their Road Dog, another dark roast from them, and I like it quite a bit.

Bumping and with another plug for Koffee Kult's regular dark roast and Road Dog, also a dark roast.
They have lighter roasts and some batches labeled by region, but a batch called "Eye-Cracker!" is intriguing me, there's a cartoon pic of some poor soul whose eyeballs are poppin out of his head.

As I sip my first cup of coffee this morning with cream, a couple shakes of cinnamon and pink salt I’m not noticing any salt flavor...it’s just a really good cup of coffee! Now, if I forget the salt I can definitely tell that something is missing. Perhaps you need to try it again but this time add a little bit more salt? I should measure how much I’m using. I have a salt grinder with big ole pink salt chunks in it. I give it two grinds, which sounds like a lot, but not much comes out because those chunks of salt are so hard to grind.IndelibleDotInk wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 12:48 amDoes the salt make the coffee taste a great deal better? I use about .5g to 1g of Ceylon Cinnamon per cup of coffee for a total of about 3-5g (max) a day with no sweetener. Cinnamon is good for reducing inflammation, helps with cholesterol, insulin, bp etc but too much of the coumarin in it can damage your liver. Ceylon has a fraction of the coumarin content of Cassia (the more common type) and tastes better, too.IndelibleDotInk wrote: ↑Wed Jul 07, 2021 12:50 am I will try the cinnamon, is it just a pinch, and is it plain, or with sugar/sweetener?

I got some expired ground Starbucks Breakfast Blend from the foodbank. Not a real fan of Starbucks' regular house coffee (tastes burnt when drinking black, but ok for mixed drinks). Will report back later, making a cold brew of this for tomorrow morning.
UPDATE: This stuff is nice as a cold brew, sweetness is brought out, no bitterness, but that's pretty standard for cold brews. Def gonna use it up asap as it's already ground and exp date was two months ago, but I'll enjoy it to the last drop. Would I buy it? No. Always get whole bean, and the Starbucks name on theppackage means it's gonna be pricey.

Koffee Kult is my favorite brand, the coffees are just spectacular and reasonably priced. They have a limited release of a dark roast (more of a medium roast tasting imo) called Cult Coffee e115, man, so good I ordered two more bags as soon as I took a first sip. JULY20 will give you 20% off!!
This E115 is my favorite coffee. Ever. If you're reading this, you should hurry and get a bag. KoffeeKult.com.

Just tried some of Koffee Kult's "Eye Cracker" beans. They're KK's espresso line. I don't know anything about espresso except high pressure is used to make a small 'shot.'
I brewed it with Aeropress, tastes ok, not great like the dark roast, Road Dog, E115. I'll have to try it with my Moka pot, which makes 'stovetop espresso,' using high heat and some pressure (but not the gagillion force used by espresso machines).

Has anyone had Black Rifle, any roasts?
