Had to put my cat down, he was my bebs as much as my dog

Post by IndelibleDotInk »

Missing my feline bebs; we put him down a few days ago.

Maximus was a larger tuxedo cat with marbled orange, red, and yellow jacket, with pink pads and nose, yeller eyes. He was my mom's cat, but when my sister moved out of state, her cat Levi came to live with us and bonded to my mom; Max gave me some of his attention. They were buds with Max the dominant, and he was cool with my dog, Mei, and liked to walk under her and ravish her chin with his tail. Recently Mei must have known he was getting weaker, cause she allowed him to push her head outta her bowl and eat some of her kibble, definitely not the normal.

He rotated his sleeping spots all over the house, but I liked it when he'd sleep on my bed and I could drowse to his purring. I did not like when he'd attack my legs if I bumped him while we were sleeping, and did not hold back on kicking him off if he started biting.

Miss the guy.

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear this. What an awful way to end an awful year, losing your buddy. Max was certainly beautiful, I'm not sure I've ever seen a ginger kitty with that marble pattern. He sounds like he was pretty feisty and full of personality! I am not at all surprised to hear that he was the alpha cat, you can see it in his sweet face! Many hugs to you and Mei, who sounds like a great dog. I bet he misses Max, too.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I've been there with my dog Max a long time back. Making
that decision is one of the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make and I'm sure it was for
you too!

Thanks, your comments pull off some of the grief. I am dreading having to put Mei down. We are moving houses probably in late Feb/early March, and it's weird that I wonder if she'll be alive for the move. I am noticing some resentment toward her, trying to love and like her less so I won't lose as much, but that'll only make it hurt more. I guess what chases that out of my mind is when I have to dig her poop out several times a day and express her bladder, putting on her harness which helps her walk; these are crummy things, but blessings in disguise. I miss having to pick up her poop on walks, she can't poop on her own, lol.

Sorry, these are such hard things to do.

My dog is around 10. I rescued her from a shelter when she was 1. She's a lab mix, the shelter said possibly a lab/greyhound mix. The shelter didn't have much information on her besides that she was abused in some way, though unsure how (To this day she hates going outside, she runs out and does her business and zips back inside... I wish she would let me take her for a walk). I got her when I was 25, and I'm 34 now, and shortly after I got her I started having health issues and spent the next few years in chronic fatigue and pain. Well she kept me sane  But yeah, I'm dreading just thinking about the day I will have to do this. Sorry you're going through it.

2020 sucks!! Wishing you peaceful thoughts and a happy new year

So so so sorry for your loss, @IndelibleDotInk! I’m still mourning the loss of my Tabookitty and he’s been gone since 2013! I had him on a leash with me for 17 wonderful years! The stories are endless...! There is no shortcut to grieving less after the unconditional love and sweetness from our pets. I’m not able to keep a pet safely at this time - where I live has room for only my mom’s dog (she is obsessing his mortality and has been trying to prepare for it, emotionally, for almost his entire life)! He’s a purebred shi tzu {chit zoo} and had health problems from puppy mills (he was a gift for Christmas, 16 years ago). He still has bad days and some good days (sort of like me and many kratom enthusiasts). Having no room for a cat or dog helped create my side business of pet sitting and I just finished up staying with a dog and 3 calicos. I really enjoy other people’s pets and I get photo updates from the pets each Christmas!

Back to YOUR loss. I hope you have minimal grief and suffering the loss of such a special influence of your every day life. Thank you for sharing some of the memories you can keep always!

Virtual hugs,

Laurie

My dog was trained in K9 nosework, a newer sport where the dog is released in a specific area (room, car, outdoor location, etc.) and find an object or place which has been scented with birch, clove, or anise oil.

They are trained like drug and bomb detection dogs, with food and toys. At one training we went to, we had a police officer hide a gram of meth, and his k9 officer went and searched for it, and found it.

So at home, I'd just hide a bunch of single kibbles in order not to scent mark the whole apt. with herbal oils, it would get confusing with all the conflicting smells. Mei loved using her sniffer to do this, it really exercised and stimulated her in a unique way. She was excellent at it.

But this is a post about my cat Max. Max was really sharp and realized Mei was searching for food when I gave the ok and she started to sniff the air. So he'd always get up and start sniffing too, racing to find the kibbles before Mei could get them. He found at least a few on every run we did. It was neat how he sniffed the air like a dog and his sense was so acute, able to play against a dog. <3

From the haiku thread:

When Max was alive
the cat liked to bite my chin
no more bloody beard

I'd pick him up, flip him over, and rub my chin on his head, which elicited a loud prrrrrr. Then he'd try to bite my chin with his incisors.

Mom and I had to surrender her dog, Teddy last week. Actually two Saturday’s ago. That was awful. Remind me not to get a pet of my own again. I am a pet sitter and have a fine time of enjoying other people’s pets!

I cried the night before when Mom’s dog actually said goodbye to me. It was blatantly obvious and I cried and cried (now I knit not an a&&hole who can’t cry. I wasn’t sure).

I loved looking at these photos! My neighbors have a cat who has his meals here and he has a crush on me. Big time. But when I was gone this past weekend, he knew I had told Mom to feed him. He had to walk around to the back of the house and MEOW SUPER LOUD (mom is hard of hearing) to get her out of bed! That got him his breakfast! Haha. I brought it up because he is an orange cat like your Max. HUGE cat. I cannot pick him up! I can only pick up the front half or the back half! Haha

I miss your Max, too.

Is Teddy haunting you or your mom? I don't see any evidence that Mei is still around, but I'm not sure. The floor of our apt was too slick for Mei's paws, so everything was covered with yoga mats and rugs.. now some of them have been put away and the apartment's sounds are louder. The sounds of her life echo in an empty living space, but not sadly. Maximus has departed the world for another destination, probably to get it ready for Mei to join. He knows my mom's cat Levi will be around, lol, in fact now Levi is getting my (unwanted) attention (except for feeding). The buggah is just meow meow meow, feed me human, now! But if we overfeed him by just one kibble, he barfs. He also barfs when fed a mix of different foods. Oh well, now he is the recipient of my scratches. He often purrs but gets irritated at the same time when I give him attention. Weirdo.

These photos of Max are terrific, especially the ones where he's interacting with Mei and Levi. I noticed that the photo of Max and Mei sleeping on your bed didn't show any room for you. As their loving human, I assume you slept on the floor? ;)

Obviously! Of course the human got the floor! Duh! LOL

Our Teddy DID haunt us last night! I always wished Tabookitty would visit again (my cat cat from 1997-2013) would shadow me or something. Nuthin. I still have his sealed box of ashes. So my mom’s phone started jamming a U2 song (not a favorite) and it was LOUD, after we both got in our beds. Right about the time that dog would have been herding us all to bed. Or telling us to stop with the lights. It sure seemed like a “sign” of some kind.

Luckily Max would move toward the foot of the bed to give me some space, lol. And he'd rotate sleeping all over the house.

He liked to wake me up on occasion, by licking my eyelids. As time went by, he switched to very very wet licks to my cheek.

I’ll try adding a few pix in one post fingers crossed (that didn’t work). I may have added Foxy on her dog bed..

Ah well... I am trying alternative photos periodically.

The pugs did start it all. You can look at just about any photo of pugs to get how they look.

They do look different once you have spent time with their crazy personalities.

We lost one of em also. Cancer. The new one was absolutely necessary for the remaining pug. He was lost in depression without the alpha pug. He needs another pug to be alpha, so they got him a new one for Christmas!

I’ll be spending June with them while the parents do a big trip to Africa. If COVID is not blocking travel altogether like last year’s trip. They wanna travel before one of them cannot - Parkinson’s.
