How you can help those on Maui: https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong

Maui avoided a hurricane, but strong winds spread a huge wildfire shut down Lahina town, burning it to the ground. 53 people are confirmed dead and a disaster has been declared.

Mahalo!

This is heartbreaking, so sorry to read about this.

We deal with brushfires often, but Hawaii??

Pineapple and sugarcane made agriculture great here, and the types of brush that grew up after those industries faded is perfect for fire.

I'm so very sorry to hear this news, IDI.
Do the landowners not do anything to avoid this kind of disaster? Controlled burns or clearing the brush? I'm not trying to assign blame (the way Trump blamed California). It' just seems like sensible stewardship could have saved lives.
Has it been unususally dry there? I was convinced we'd have a drought this year but we ended up having a Derecho storm that left a portion of the city in the dark for nearly two weeks. Only five days for us. And we've had a fair bit of rain since then.

Yes, actually some controlled burns got out of hand due to high winds of a passing hurricane and started all this.

Amazing, the fire is still burning, but not an essential area. Over 100 confirmed dead, but possibly hundreds more; it's hard to identify ashed bodies.

Historic Lahina town is gone, literally just cinders. Owners will get help with taxes and necessities, thankfully.

Biden says he will come for a visit to show support, but not just yet - he doesn't want to interfere or cause extra work, which is nice of him.

$ goes all to Maui.

Aloha and mahalos mainland and international peeps!
